Since the writing of this post, I've had several visitors arrive from Google using the following search terms:

- Ubuntu Thunderbird system beep
- Ubuntu wont come out of standby
- my laptop is not coming out of standby
- standby failure ubuntu
- stop Ubuntu feisty system beep
- stopping system beep opensuse
- ubuntu feisty fawn standby

Which makes me think:

- Who thought...hmmm...how should we notify the user that they have new email? Nah, let's not use the normal speaker. I know...let's use the system beep! Crazy.
- Apparently there ARE standby issues in Ubuntu. I can also attest to that; I've had three separate times since the writing of my post that my laptop has failed to successfully come back out of standby. In my case, my screen comes up with my login window, but I can't click or type anything, yet my mouse still moves. Hopefully Gutsy will bring better support.

Oh, and I forgot to mention--if you like Ubuntu, you may love Linux Mint (http://linuxmint.com). It's based on Ubuntu but includes more codecs, drivers, etc. so that even more stuff "just works." Not to mention it looks fantastic. Watch for a new release after Gutsy is finalized.

I've been enjoying Feisty as well. I'm getting excited about the new release of Ubuntu coming next month ("Gutsy Gibbon") with a bunch of great new features. Check out http://lunapark6.com/ubuntu-gutsy-gibbon-710-new-features.html for details. I'm waiting for Gutsy to try Compiz-Fusion. In other good Linux news, ATI will be open-sourcing and releasing better drivers for their video cards. Hopefully they'll be released with (or soon after) Gutsy.
